Chapter Thirteen

Hailey

Sitting against the wall was no longer an option for Hailey, not with the wounds crisscrossing her back. She lay on her side facing the bars in her tattered shirt and watched the guard nicknamed Sadist.

Addy had gleaned from her own investigation that Fritz would leave once they detonated the tunnel. Her sudden appearance was a blessing and a foreshadowing of her family’s demise.

Her sister’s running commentary detailed Colson and Leigh’s run for the entrance and the location of the explosives. Three of Addy’s spirit helpers possessed guards and forced them to disable the closest bombs.

Hailey sighed her relief when told Colson and Leigh made it out in time.

Abbreviated conversations concerning Addy and her friends when the guards were absent clued Larissa and Brock in about their unseen help. Each had promised to carry the secret to their grave. She prayed today wasn’t that day.

Just the thought of seeing Trenton and Casper again gave her hope. One psychic, the other with more determination than any person had a right to have. They made a great team; though, neither one would admit it.

“Now your friends are dead. And you will die with them.” Sadist’s nasal twine declared victory. She hadn’t given up, despite the guard claiming all psychics and bear shifters would soon be dead.

“No.” She couldn’t believe it. Ever.

“Jun is a mastermind who sees to every detail, every possibility. His advance to one of the new order’s lieutenants is well earned and with his rise, he’ll take me along with him.”

Neither could foresee the will or resolve of her friends, both old and new.

The fact Brock practiced shifting whenever they were alone attested to his strength of will. His bond with Larissa grew stronger with every story they’d shared. It helped balance them all.

If anyone spied electronically, they wouldn’t learn much useful information, other than the fact bear shifters were devoted to their mates.

In the end, it wouldn’t matter as the guards would either be dead or in black site seclusion.

This faction of evil had never challenged the task force or the group backing them. Their little skirmish wasn’t over, a fact she kept forefront in Brock and Larissa’s minds every time they returned from another torture session.

A deep rumbling under her hip and shoulder brought a wave of panic. The Rocky Mountain and Columbia Plateau regions composed the most seismically active areas in the United States. Most of that activity occurred north of Colorado, but even then, the Earth’s grumbling could be felt from that distance when strong enough.

This was different. Hailey knew it in an instant when her mind registered the first blast. The explosion echoed as the ground trembled.

“Hailey?” Larissa’s thin voice shook. “They’re going to kill us by squashing us under tons of rock?”

Hailey blinked twice as Addy came into view. “Thank God. I can see you now. That means Fritz is no longer present or active. Either way, doesn’t matter.”

She pushed against her mat to get into a sitting position. Her gaze took in the dirt on the floor, sliding under the mountain’s fury.
